Despite a temperature of only 14 degrees and a strong north easterly, over one thousand three hundred people signed up for this years Rotary Tesco 10K in Enniskillen. Five years ago the Rotary club of Enniskillen initiated the race to celebrate its 50th birthday but such was it?s success that the race is now an annual event sponsored by Tesco with huge support from Fermanagh District Council.

This community event, which includes a kiddies kanter for primary school children in the morning (complete with puppet shows and bouncy castles), started with 440 entries in 2005 and has been steadily growing.

As well as raising funds for this other nominated charity, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, an estimated £35,000 was raised for good causes. Fermanagh District Council and Tesco are naturally pleased and have indicated their continuing support for the 2010 event when the organisers hope to reach a new milestone of 1500 entrants.

This particular 10K course is not perhaps the fastest in the county with one very substantial climb, but thanks to the good will of the National Trust in allowing the race to include the roads and paths of one of its crown jewels, Castlecoole House, it has to be one of the most senic. Other landmarks along the route include the Killyhevlin Hotel, the Ardhowen Theatre, (an award winning public building), as well as paths along and pedestrian bridge over, Lough Erne.

This years winner, Stephen Duncan from Omagh Harriers, completed the course in 31 minutes 30 seconds while the majority either jogged or walked giving a little more time to take in the views and chat to the Rotary Club members marshalling the six mile course.

The first lady home was Donna Evans in a time of 37minutes 49 seconds. The King and Queen of the Race ( the first Fermanagh man and women home, sponsored by the Killyhevlin Hotel) were Tommy Farrell 33:36 and Angela Speight 38:39.
